How to use PetroAlign

Getting started

  1. Try the demo. New project → Load demo data gives 8 wells with tops, TWT picks, a fault, a seismic time surface, lease blocks and a CRS, so you can try every tool.
  2. Load your wells. Drag LAS files onto the page or click Load LAS files. LAS 1.2, 2.0 and 3.0 are read. For logs in CSV, text or Excel use Wells → Import ASCII/Excel logs.
  3. Name the project in the box next to the logo, and set its coordinate system with the CRS button.
  4. Save. Work is kept in this browser automatically. Use Save project to keep a .json file you can open on any computer.

The screen has three views: Correlation, Plots and Maps. The panel on the left changes with the tab you choose (Wells, Tops, Interp, Discrete, Tracks, Well). Drag its edge to resize it, click ‹ to hide it, or use Full screen.

Projects, saving and undo

  • Undo / Redo: ↶ ↷ in the top bar, or Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y (⌘ on Mac). The last 40 steps are kept.
  • New project starts empty or with demo data. Open project reads a saved .json file.
  • A project file holds wells (LAS text), tops, interpretations, tracks, map and plot settings, base maps, surfaces, faults and the CRS.
  • Clearing the browser's site data also clears work kept in the browser, so save a project file for anything important.

Wells and well data

  • Wells tab: show/hide, reorder (↑ ↓) and remove wells. Click a well to select it.
  • New well creates a well without logs, for example a proposed location with a planned trajectory and target.
  • Import well data reads well headers (name, X, Y, KB, GL, TD…) and deviation surveys for many wells from one ASCII, CSV, Excel or Petrel .dev file. Headers only, surveys only, or both, in any order. A preview shows how columns are matched.
  • Import ASCII/Excel logs: choose the depth column, depth unit, null value and the curves to load, into a new well or an existing one.
  • Well tab: header details, coordinates, KB/GL, deviation survey (TVD by minimum curvature), curve mapping and the curve list.

Tops and correlation

  • Choose Pick top, select the top in the toolbar, and click on a well. Drag a top line to move it.
  • Flatten on any top, or show all wells in MD, TVD or TVDSS.
  • Tops tab: exact depths, thickness table, colours and names. Import tops reads long (Well, Surface, MD or Z), wide (one column per top) or Petrel well-tops files. Export as CSV or Petrel well tops.
  • Zoom with Ctrl/⌘ + scroll, the – + buttons or the View %. Fit shows the full depth; Fit all wells shows every well across.
  • Set a true scale (1:500, 1:1000…) and Lock scale for printing. Export saves the panel as PDF, PNG, JPEG or WebP, with a depth range, scale, page size and title block.

Tracks and curves

  • Tracks tab: add, remove, reorder and resize tracks; add curves with colour, line style, scale (linear/log) and fills.
  • On the panel, drag a track title to move the track, or a curve name onto another track to move the curve. Click a header to edit it.
  • Add synthetic seismogram adds a track drawn from sonic and density (see Seismic well tie).
  • Discrete tab: facies or zone logs with your own codes and colours. Paint intervals on the panel with Paint.

Petrophysics (Interp tab)

  • Vsh: linear, Larionov (tertiary/older) or Clavier from GR.
  • Porosity: density, neutron–density, with shale correction.
  • Water saturation: Archie, Simandoux or Indonesia, with a, m, n and Rw.
  • Permeability: Timur, Coates, or a porosity transform log10(k) = a·Φe + b (fit it to core in the Well tab).
  • Net pay: cutoffs on Vsh, Φe and Sw give N/G, average Φe, Sw and k·h per zone.
  • Curve calculator for your own formulas, and splicing of runs into one curve.

Core data

  • Well tab → Core data → Import core data: CSV/Excel with Well (optional for one well), Depth and any of Porosity, Permeability, Grain density, Sw. Porosity in % is converted.
  • Core shows as ◆ on the porosity, permeability, density and Sw tracks.
  • Set a core depth shift, or Find best depth shift to match core and log porosity.
  • Fit permeability transform to core sets log10(k) = a·Φ + b from all core and reruns the quick-look.

Seismic well tie

  • Enter TWT picks per top (Maps → TWT picks table) or load a seismic time surface.
  • Well tab → Synthetic seismogram and well tie: needs a sonic (DT) curve; density is optional (Gardner is used without it).
  • Tie by a bulk shift to one top or a stretch to all TWT picks. The table compares synthetic and picked times.
  • Export time–depth table saves MD, TVD, TVDSS and TWT as CSV.

Plots

  • Crossplots and histograms of any curves, coloured by well, zone or a third curve (Z axis).
  • Filter by wells, zones and a depth range. Log scales, axis limits, fit line.
  • Scroll to zoom and drag to pan. Drag the legend and title to move them; double-click them to edit the text.

Maps

  • Map types: depth and time structure, isochore, isochron, isopach, velocity, depth conversion, residual, dip and azimuth, net pay, Φ, Sw, Vsh, permeability, k·h, Φh, HCPV, facies %, HC column, curve averages, volumetrics, and imported surfaces.
  • Gridding: minimum curvature or inverse distance, with masks, contour interval, colour ramps and labels.
  • Faults: Draw fault on the map, or use shapefile lines as faults. Gridding honours them.
  • Volumetrics: set a contact, FVF, N/G, Φ and Sw for STOIIP or GIIP.
  • Drag the title, legend and north arrow to move them, and edit their text. Export PNG, grid CSV and well values.

Base maps, grids and coordinates

  • Base maps: shapefile (.zip or .shp+.dbf+.prj), KML/KMZ, GeoJSON, DXF, CSV/Excel points, GeoTIFF, JPG/PNG with a world file.
  • Grids and surfaces: ZMap+, Surfer (ASCII, 6, 7), CPS-3, IRAP, EarthVision/XYZ, Esri ASCII (.asc) and single-band GeoTIFF. Show them with map type Imported surface or grid.
  • CRS: choose from about 6,500 EPSG systems (UTM, Kalianpur/Indian grids, WGS 84…) or build your own. Layers in other systems are reprojected.

Export

  • Correlation panel: PDF, PNG, JPEG or WebP at a true scale.
  • Wells: LAS with interpreted and calculated curves (Interp tab → Export well). Time–depth table from the well tie.
  • Tops: CSV or Petrel well tops. Maps: PNG and grid CSV. Plots: PNG.

Your data

Everything runs in your browser. LAS files, tops and interpretations are never uploaded. The Feedback form sends only what you type.

Shortcuts

  • Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y undo and redo · Ctrl+scroll zoom the panel · scroll move in depth
  • F1 opens this help in the app · Esc closes a dialog · double-click a plot title or legend to edit it

If something goes wrong

  • A LAS file will not load: check it has ~V, ~W, ~C and ~A sections. For files without them use Import ASCII/Excel logs.
  • A curve is missing from a track: check Curve mapping in the Well tab.
  • Wells are not on the map: set X/Y or latitude/longitude in the Well tab, and the project CRS.
  • Work disappeared: the browser's site data was cleared. Open your saved project file.
  • Still stuck? Use Feedback in the top bar.
